Review of Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Moving picture, 126 minutes

A bored veteran of the recently concluded Second World War breaks parking meters just to have something to do in his home town, so he’s sent up the creek for two years of hard labour in a Florida chain gang. Willpower gets him into trouble with his fellow inmates, but also allows him to smirk at the rules and “bosses” of the prison, until the management perceives a need to break him. Willpower may not beat a world of rules.

Unfortunate clash between extensive realism and isolated mythology (Christianity versus the eyeless, mute Boss Godfrey).
