Review of “From Idea to Film” (1979)

Text

Miyazaki Hayao (writer).

Read in Starting Point.

The process of planning and revision in the production of animation.

A series of four essays. Speaking of commercial pressures upon the industry, Miyazaki often meanders away from the subject, deprecating inward-facing subgenres that fail to attract a new audience. He alleges, for instance, that mecha fans develop naturally to become “knee-jerk advocates of increasing Japan’s actual military strength”.
