Review of “Gunnm” (1993)
The head of an android discarded by a higher society is found and equipped with a body. The individual awakens without a memory, to an extremely brutal world where she begins to fight for her friends. Being of superior programming, she doesn’t lose, but her friends are far more vulnerable and bite the dust.
Morbid cyberpunk. A short miniseries version of the beginning of a long comic, in which the inversion of the hero’s success story is the point of the whole thing. How much suffering can the invulnerable star handle? “Gunnm” is reportedly, somehow, short for Gun Dream. The official English distribution is called “Battle Angel Alita”, an American invention.
