Review of Mating (2019)

Moving picture, 93 minutes

Seen in 2019.

Most of the material is shot on phones and webcams. Most the remainder is faked, poorly reconstructed from online exchanges. It’s a pain to watch and the sound is no better. There are scenes where the leads look pretty cute in their vulnerable moments of authenticity, and there are other scenes that provide a sense of the most millennial cohort’s mentality: Technologically mediated preening with occasional emotional openness, free of dogma but internally contradictory: Veganism but with carefree travel by air, and unprecedented sexual freedom with moldy old astrology guiding the way.
