Review of Millennium Actress (2001)

Moving picture, 87 minutes

The life story of an old actor, interviewed by one of her fans. She spends her life searching for a mysterious stranger with whom she fell in love as a young girl in fascist Imperial Japan. The interview blends with her biography and with the films she has made. A sketchy truth is offered in the end.

Meta-heavy drama by Kon Satoshi. Very good music. Strings together a series of climaxes without effective buildup and sheds causality, making it dramatically uninteresting. Beware of comic relief.
