Review of “No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka” (2013)

Moving picture, 49 minutes

Seen in 2016.

The war crimes of Sri Lankan government forces and their Tamil Tiger rebel opponents, chiefly in the 2009 phase of their conflict, with an emphasis on the government shelling of UN hospitals and aid stations in the ever shrinking “no fire zone”.

The scenes shot on phones are particularly disturbing because of how the soldiers talk about the raped corpse of a tamil newscaster and because the war criminals themselves recorded them. That combination of primal sexual aggression and modern technology is an important picture of humanity in 2009.
