‣‣ Oedipus at Colonus (401 BCEText)

Sophocles (writer).

Read in 2022.

Read in its English-language translation by Richard Claverhouse Jebb.

This play, written last, forms an interquel between the other two of Sophocles’s Theban plays. It doesn’t have the formal dramatic strengths of the earlier work, just Creon’s veiled attack and the thunder that signals Zeus’s desire for Oedipus to die. Oedipus’s double-edged fate, cursed for a sin he did not know he was committing and destined to bless the place of his death after having punished himself already, is certainly evocative, but its indirect relation in the coda is annoying in its vagueness; the man just disappears.
