Review of Ordet (1955)

Moving picture, 126 minutes

Quibbling Danes of different denominations are united by a resurrection in 1925.

Very smoothly composed but ideologically abhorrent religious drama. An influential minimalist auteur piece.

Not only does religious faith produce a glaring miracle, to the point of converting an atheist, but the best kind of faith is evidently the most blind and paralytic, as in 1 Kings (ca. 620–530 BCE) etc. I can enjoy religious dramas when they’re done with honesty, but this is laughably vulgar, and not pretty enough to entertain in spite of its plot. The most fun I had was seeing the basis of a Varanteatern joke: “Skräddaren säger nej!!”
