Review of Sir Arne’s Treasure (1919)

Moving picture, 122 minutes

Review refers to the 2001 restoration, seen with the excellent live accompaniment of three musicians on six instruments, including Matti Bye, whose somewhat gloomy score it was.

Brilliant trick filming and moving camera. Stiffly structured and too faithful to the literary original, as the director (Mauritz Stiller) later realized. The ultimately heavy-handed, punitive moralism is also unfortunate.
