Review of Slogans (2001)

Moving picture, 90 minutes

Albania is an economically and militarily insignificant speck of a country in the decades-long grip of an isolationist regime. It is not yet common knowledge who won in Vietnam, nor that the war there ended ten years ago. A new teacher arrives at a rural school and encounters local government: A miniature dictatorship, not very violent but full of inertia, and mad about slogans.

Historical drama at the ass end of the Ionian Sea. All the fun of a totalitarian crypto-communist dystopia, crafted as a staunchly peaceful black comedy in the sunny middle of nowhere.
