Review of Swamp Thing (1982)

Sequential art with text

Alan Moore (writer).

Read in 2019.

This review refers to Alan Moore’s run, which is itself just one part of the “second series” of The Saga of the Swamp Thing.

A series of experiments of variable merit, now interesting only for their historical significance. It’s early environmentalist superhero action, and the first “mainstream” series to abandon Comics Code Authority approval. Sadly, though Moore’s run helped pull out the long blade of the 1950s moral panic that led to the Code, and also helped spawn DC’s Vertigo imprint for adult comics, Swamp Thing remains one of DC’s never-ending human centipede titles and cannot be meaningfully reviewed as one artistic work.
