Review of “The Kiss” (1896)
Apparently the most popular film in the first year of Edison’s (bought) Vitascope projection mechanism. The source is theatre—albeit shot in a studio—but I wonder if that is the whole explanation for the strangeness of the “kiss” itself. It’s more of a physically intimate chat than what is now considered a kiss.
