A woman tests whether a simulation of her brilliant mother is still working after a software update.
Talabi spells everything out in rather dull prose and takes the usual shortcut of copying human neurology to build AI as a prerequisite for traditional SF drama. Problematically, the philosophical paradox at the heart of the story is not the sorites (heap) Talabi advertises but instead the ship of Theseus. Still, it works.
