Review of Viridiana (1961)

Moving picture, 90 minutes

Seen in 2017.

The cynical darkness of “Land Without Bread” (1933) without its creativity and surreal comedy, stripped to a realist chamber play. The criticism of religion and its conservative values, while too strong for Franco’s censors, is too weak for me, and I already knew that it’s difficult to solve poverty by housing a handful of poor adults.
