Reviews of Full Metal Panic! (2002) and related work

Full Metal Panic! (2002Moving picture, 20 hours)

A young soldier does a terrible job of innocuously protecting a girl his age. The story moves from there to a hostage situation, mecha battles in a fictionalized Middle East and whatnot.

Mecha action, with some romance and plenty of comedy. Studio Gonzo. Some ugly mecha and very uneasy mixtures of moods. Way too silly to be taken seriously where it wants to be. Based on a comic.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (2003Moving picture, 5.0 hours)

Focuses completely on the concept of the first five or so episodes of the original series. Chidori and Sousuke have something like a relationship. He does gun-nut stuff and she has outbursts about it.

Comedy alternating between romance and action directions. Produced by Kyoto Animation, as that studio’s second in-house project. Sillier than the original, but basically a good choice of concept. A lot of laughs, such as Sousuke misanalyzing poetry over the opening of Apocalypse Now (1979). Too simple and predictable, and still too many clashes to be really good.
