The fan club of this film had 1700 members ten years after it was made. The behaviours portrayed in it, which would have been socially permissible when most of us lived in similar small communities, apparently holds some strange fascination in our time. An older, in some ways more tolerant norm is fetishized, at the same time as the individuals who represent it are mocked and worshipped in equal measure.
