Commentary

A bit better than the remake. The psychologist’s sincere insistence at the end is especially good. However, even here, the premise is telegraphed and abused for tired forms of horror. Putting the regrettable technophobia aside, if you want to do horror on this premise it ought to be more invasive and primal: Possession (1981), Videodrome (1983), Jacob’s Ladder (1990), not this pedestrian fated romance punctuated by mistaken identities that are not explained by the premise.
