Semantic relations by kanji

The table in this article presents several pieces of information for each of the kanji in the EDRDG’s KANJIDIC, specifically kanjidic2 as of 2019-10-06. This project is based on the work of Jim Breen and many others. Notice this is not the same source I used in the previous article. I needed more extensive data with a clear license.

The columns of the table are:

• Indices in P. G. O’Neill’s Essential Kanji.
• School grades as presented by Breen. 1–6 are actual grades of elementary school, 8 symbolizes the entirety of secondary school, and anything higher or different is beyond the set of jōyō kanji.
• The subject kanji itself.
• English-language meanings as suggested by KANJIDIC, excluding kokuji markers and with a handful of minor corrections.
• Related kanji, in two buckets: jōyō and non-jōyō. The non-jōyō relations tend to include alternative forms of the same kanji.

As with the deck I used in the previous article, Breen’s meanings are not a perfect basis for finding relations. For example, KANJIDIC uses “glance”, “glance at” and “to glance at”, all as separate meanings of different kanji. This is why the comparisons made herein are partly based on the individual words within meanings, as quick-and-dirty proxies for sememes.

With meanings

In the following table, kanji are sorted first by grade, then by O’Neill’s index, which happens to be a reasonable order of study. The related kanji are sorted in descending order of semantic overlap.
