Review of “A Tale of the Ragged Mountains” (1844)
Edgar Allan Poe (writer).
Read in 2022.
Amid a “psychal” craze in 1845, an unidentified narrator relates the story of how, in 1827, a mesmerist produced a flashback to 1780.
Awkwardly told and ostensibly based on a true story with some connection to real-world spiritual woo, this short story has the worst of Poe’s twist endings, visible a mile away.
