Review of “After Dark in the Playing Fields” (1924)

Text

M. R. James (writer).

Read in 2017.

Comedy horror. The horror part is entirely concentrated to a single-paragraph postlude, which is suggestive enough. As for the main body of the work, the funny-animal owl with its coarse working-class dialect of English does at least clarify that James was less afraid of owls than of spiders.
