Review of Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)

Moving picture, 117 minutes

Seen in 2019.

At one point, an empty suit of armour bashes in a Nazi’s head with a mace through his Stahlhelm, but there isn’t really a plot to explain why this happens.

Mixed live action and animation in a musical fantasy. Taking the Nazis from The Sound of Music (1965) and putting them in Mary Poppins (1964) looks like a good idea on paper, but Angela Lansbury ain’t no Julie Andrews. The musical sequences are worse than usual and there are some severe shortfalls in pacing, but I liked the football game, which is the only sequence with worthwhile animation.
