Review of “Cold Print” (1969)
Ramsey Campbell (writer).
Read in 2025.
A connoisseur of lurid fiction in contemporary Brichester, England, misses the company of a trusted bookseller.
The first story about Y'golonac, in a Liverpudlian version of Lovecraft’s New England, with an explicit reference to Lovecraft as existing within the extended Mythos. Late-’60s England is an interesting place for this kind of fan fiction; the main character reminds me of Jethro Tull’s Aqualung character from a couple of years later. However, Campbell doesn’t bring any good or new ideas to the setting; he just puts a nightmare filter over the everyday.
