Review of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” (1979)
Ōtomo Katsuhiro (writer-artist).
Read in 2021.
Read in Japanese in the Sayonara Nippon (1981) collection.
The members of a starving rock band run up a tab at the local pub, habitually delaying payment by pretending to take their internal rivalries outside. The old lady who runs the place makes them an offer to cancel their tab if they play at a special, private event.
A tall tale, but warm; unusually humanistic for Ōtomo.
