Review of Equals (2015)

Moving picture, 101 minutes

Seen in 2020.

Effectively a remake of THX-1138 (1971/2004) without Lucas’s interest in action and catharsis, or his flair for cultural history. The aesthetics resemble Gattaca (1997), and as in Gattaca, there is a certain rationalism to this dystopia, insofar as the presence of normal human emotions is discussed and stigmatized as a treatable disease, not as a crime. That’s all fine, but the thought experiment is entirely THX and makes as little sense as the original. I take it to be an ironically monotonous allegory of monotonous office work.
