By this point, riddles like this had become thankfully rare in Dickinson’s writing, and richer. In this case, the poet connects both to mysticism and to the poetics of “Ode on a Grecian Urn” (1819), putting a humble cricket and “Nature” in the place of Keats’s artifice.
