Review of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)

Moving picture, 92 minutes

Seen in 2016.

It’s good to the extent that it’s realistic, and in the expressionist horror of the very final shot. However, the fast-motion action set piece and the many attempts at irony and wit spoil credibility and drag it out unnecessarily. Bonus points for humanizing the sole black character—previously referred to as a “buck”—in the only short scene where he’s allowed to speak at all.
