Review of “Il pleure dans mon cœur” (1874)

Paul Verlaine (writer).

Read in 2022.

This untitled poem is part of the suite Ariettes oubliées.

Read in its original language and in Swedish-language prose translation.

What! No treason?

I love the second-to-last stanza which, with a sharp interjection, introduces the poet’s awareness that his sadness has no reasonable basis in fact. This seems like a leap forward in what is otherwise just another poem about feeling down.
