Review of Interface (2017)
Seen in 2021.
A silent immortal who resembles Magritte’s The Son of Man (1964) teams up with a polymorphic survivor of the 1943 Philadelphia Experiment against a corporation working to undo the experiment’s surreal effects.
Lo-fi 2D/3D auteur animation by Justin Tomchuk, complete with his original score and a helpful list, to the end credits, of the individual works of art referenced throughout. The plot and atmosphere are a pleasant mashup of US horror and Japanese SF animation, but the action is almost completely stripped out in favour of arthouse set pieces and jokes reminiscent of 1990s computer games.
