Review of Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle (2018)
Seen in 2018.
Jim Jones, the “Peoples Temple” (sic) and the mass murder of 1978.
Listed and produced in the genre of “true crime”. An odd mix of reasonably deep and serious investigation with contemporary genre tropes: The gritty lo-fi intro, the scary music, the shaken witnesses, the redundant live-action reconstructions, and the terrible cliffhangers. I was disappointed to get so little insight into the minds of Jones’s lieutenants, who helped him stage the healings.
