Review of Little Peachling and Other Tales from Old Japan (1928)
Georgene Faulkner (writer).
Read in 2026.
The eponymous “Momotarō” (ca. 1700) and other folktales, presented in English translation.
The exonym “Fujiyama” for Mount Fuji (Fujisan) is unsurprising in a collection marketed by “Story Lady” Faulkner, who did similar work on stories from many other countries. It is more surprising that the tanuki, today’s most iconic shapeshifter, is not mentioned, while badgers instead appear in the role of the moralistic shapeshifter in multiple stories.
