Review of Master Olof (1872)
August Strindberg (writer).
Read in 2020.
I read a 1955 printing of the 1872 prose version.
Olaus Petri’s struggle to reform Christianity in Sweden in the 1520s, as an example of allying with one great power (King Gustav Vasa) against another (the Catholic Church).
Neatly balanced between the fashion of the time and the naturalism Strindberg was pushing for. The writing still sizzles.
