Review of Once Upon a Time in China (1991)

Moving picture, 134 minutes

Seen in 2017.

Mythical doctor, militia leader and martial arts expert Wong Fei-Hung.

Some scenes are technically excellent, particularly Wong’s last fight with “Iron Vest” Yim, but the script is as loose as the dubbing, and the low budget shines through in the small number of static locations and occasionally sloppy sound effects. The treatment of colonialism isn’t particularly good, though I very much enjoyed the leading American roles, and the scene of Chinese women kidnapped to become sex slaves in America, who manage to force one of their kidnappers into the ship’s furnace.
