Review of Route Irish (2010)

Moving picture, 109 minutes

Seen in 2015.

Uncomfortably balanced between Loach’s usual social realism and the action thriller genre. The car bomb, in particular, pushes it into action spectacle territory. I would have preferred Nelson’s friends being manipulated to take revenge. The full-screen video-phone conversations also stretch credibility. Even so, it is far more engaging than unambiguous genre films on similar topics.
