Review of “Staying Behind” (2011)

Text

Ken Liu (writer).

Read in 2021.

When most people freely have their minds digitized, some live as scavengers in the remains of analog civilization.

Where are the Mennonites in this future? The Amish? Given that the protagonist talks about his choice as “keeping the faith”, I interpret the story to be a metaphor for clinging to tradition for religious reasons, yet the hundreds of thousands of people in the USA who actually cling to tradition for religious reasons—and already know how to produce new textiles etc.—seem to have uploaded with all the rest.
