Review of The Big Blue (1988)
Seen in 2016.
I saw the 168 minute director’s cut.
Luc Besson pulls off the atmosphere of a Franco-Belgian comic in live action. The tiny Japanese roles, speaking good Japanese in an effective parody of the nation’s regimented over-sincerity at the height of the bubble, demonstrate the attention to detail. My favourite scene is Johana and Jacques’ first date at the dolphinarium, where the actors’ oversized wardrobe heightens their cartoonish look of innocence.
