Review of “The Book” (ca. 1933)
H. P. Lovecraft (writer).
Read in 2025.
For he who passes the gateways always wins a shadow, and never again can he be alone.
If you’re deeply into Lovecraft, you should read this story, because it presents an explanation of how his wizards think. The narrator is himself a wizard, which is also unusual for the writer. Unfortunately, the nature of the explanation is tailored to excuse lazy writing, in this case a hackneyed lyricism without specificity.
