Review of The Maxx (1995)
A crazy bum in a superhero costume drifts between two worlds: A dark city on the one hand, and a free but dangerous wilderness on the other. He is protected by a “freelance social worker” with similar personal issues and plagued by the attention of a psychopath doubling as narrator, who is quite alone in knowing what is actually going on. Will the bum and his jungle queen find sanity together, or will they collapse in the self-destructive escalation of their nightmares?
Surreal neo-noir-comedy, making heavy but insincere use of psychology, and playing around with various traditional emblems of American cartoons. Good writing and acting, bad visual design.
