“The Nebraskan and the Nereid” (1985
)
Gene Wolfe (writer).
Read in 2025.
Read in the collection Endangered Species (1989).
A moderate case of “As you know, Bob,” props up Wolfe’s game with the idea of popular Greek legends being true without observable impact on the present.
‣ “Lord of the Land” (1990
)
Gene Wolfe (writer).
Read in 2025.
The Nebraskan collects folklore at a Tennessee farm.
The point of interest here is Wolfe’s open and deliberate tribute to H. P. Lovecraft. He gets it right, particularly folklorist Sam Cooper’s speculation on how a Lovecraftianized psychopomp started its time on Earth in the body of a jackal.
