This story has aged poorly. When it was written, it was cheaper and more effective to run a troll factory like the Internet Research Agency, founded a year later, in 2013. Ten years later, deepfake video and other AI technology had enabled the sort of work that’s done in “The Segment”, without the obvious liabilities of murdering real people on video and then broadcasting it.
