Review of The Song of Roland (ca. 1115)

Text

Read in Dorothy L. Sayers’ translation.

A fascinating look into the bizarre mentality of medieval knighthood, or what the rich men of the time would like to believe about it, which is brutal. Charlemagne is made an idol and the Muslims are utterly vilified. Sadly a likely influence on the First Crusade.
