Review of Tillsammans (2000)

Moving picture, 106 minutes

An ordinary middle-aged woman moves to her younger brother’s socialist commune after her drunken husband beats her in 1975. Life there is warmly chaotic, full of individuals who try and sometimes fail to persevere in the common ideal that eating porridge together is better than dining on fillet alone.

Comic palimpsest. An optimistic description of my parents’ generation’s idealism, partly overshadowed by great characters. The central saying is a variation on Proverbs 15:17 with an emphasis on community rather than love and hate.
