Review of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (2009)

Moving picture, 4.2 hours

2012 is the year of the great earthquake everyone knew would come (off by a year, in retrospect), and the death toll is higher than that of 1923. Two children and a motorbike courier trek through the ruins for days on end, trying to get home.

Near-future hard science fiction tragedy, much like Threads (1984) but less political and more sentimental. The view from below is quite successful, but some set pieces (Tokyo Tower!) are silly. Like The Day the Earth Moved (1997), Tokyo Magnitude is animated for the sake of realism.
