Review of “What Was It? A Mystery” (1859)
Fitz James O’Brien (writer).
Read in 2017.
An invisible humanoid creature in contemporary New York.
A good example both of a certain naturalism—the supernatural creature essentially starving to death in captivity—and of the characters within the story discussing supernatural horror literature, and laughing, without breaking the fourth wall.
