Review of Ascension (2021)

Moving picture, 97 minutes

Seen in 2022.

Mainland Chinese capitalism, mainly as seen from below.

A fly-on-the-wall documentary. The editing and dramatically reinforcing music are more conspicuous than, for example, Our Daily Bread (2005), but the film is not nearly as aestheticized or symbolically rich as Koyaanisqatsi (1982). There is little in it that could not be gained from news reports.
