Review of “Broken Down Film” (1985)

Moving picture, 6 minutes

Tezuka Osamu (writer-director).

Straight out of an early American serial: A cowboy saves a girl tied to a train track, defeats a villain and lives happily with her for a time, only to depart once more on the trail.

5-minute metafiction, ostensibly created in 1885, seven years before Reynaud invented animation. Numerous gags, most of them involving apparent imperfections in the “aged” physical film.
