Review of “The Lights of Zenshōen” (2002)
Miyazaki Hayao (writer).
Read in 2021.
Read in Turning Point.
When making Princess Mononoke (1997), Miyazaki’s two- to three-hour Sunday walks take him to an old site for people with Hansen’s disease.
A very nice personal reflection that says a lot about the director. Oddly enough, this story appears nowhere in the other material on the making of the film in Turning Point, despite some of the interviews touching on the presence of lepers in the film itself, and the reasons for including them.
