Review of “The Question Is Whether You Really Find It Interesting or Not” (2005)

Text

Miyazaki Hayao (participant), Nick Park (participant).

Read in 2021.

Read in Turning Point as “The Question Is Whether You Really Find It Interesting or Not: A Talk with Director Nick Park at the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival”.

It’s not entirely off the wall, since Miyazaki had already toured Aardman and Aardman stuff had already been exhibited at the Ghibli Museum, but the “talk” is an awkward cross-promotional affair, conducted very politely through an interpreter and an interviewer. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) is mentioned along with various other Wallace and Gromit films. The best part, however, is Miyazaki talking about his production-length cycles of mania and torpor: “Making films is all about—as soon as you’re finished—continually regretting what you’ve done.”
