Review of Volga: Mother of Rivers (2019)

Moving picture, 104 minutes

Seen in 2020.

I saw a version with Swedish-language narration and German-langague maps on SVT: 2 × 52 episodes.

The first episode squeezes in some nice old Orthodox convents and a charming Russian desman. The second episode has a floppy-nosed saiga antelope running in slow motion and finds a symbolically rich wreck of a small fishing boat in the estuary, where eagles have nested atop the bridge roof and smaller birds occupy other parts of the boat in order of size and rank.

The Volga estuary features more briefly, and more stereotypically, in the second episode of Destination Wild: Wild Russia (2018), as it relates to the Caspian Sea.
